Catherine J Corfield

Born in Hampshire in 1978, Catherine Corfield is a British landscape artist whose love for art sparked at a young age and has been the guiding force throughout her academic and professional journey. With a determination to push the boundaries of her creativity, Catherine embarked on her artistic path while studying at the University of Northampton, where she obtained a fine art degree with honours.

Driven by a thirst for further artistic refinement, Catherine pursued a Masters degree at the University of Greenwich. This advanced study not only deepened her understanding of the art world but also encouraged her to explore new concepts and techniques, laying the foundation for her artistic development.

Inspired by a desire for adventure and cultural immersion, Catherine embarked on a transformative journey around South Asia, residing in South Korea and teaching English to children and young adults. This experience not only broadened her artistic horizons but also enriched her understanding of different cultures, infusing her work with a unique blend of perspectives.

After her international escapades, Catherine settled in Yorkshire, England for several years, where she focused on nurturing her growing family while continuing her artistic practice.

Following the global pandemic, Catherine and her family made the decision to relocate to Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, she now works from her home studio, drawing inspiration from the captivating Scottish countryside. The ever-changing colours and interplay of light serve as a constant muse, driving her to create artworks that evoke emotional responses and invite viewers to appreciate the wonders of nature.

Catherine regularly exhibits her works across the country, offering art enthusiasts and collectors an opportunity to experience her  landscapes firsthand. Her artistic style is characterized by rich textures, vibrant hues, and strong compositions, inviting viewers on a visual journey where they can view the profound connection between humanity and the natural world.

Artist Statement

My artistic focus revolves around impressionistic landscapes, infused with elements of romanticism. Through the medium of oils and occasionally acrylics, I strive to express the profound connection between humans and the natural world.

In an increasingly technological society, I believe it is vital to retreat to nature, shedding the confines and demands of modern life. As the British landscape changes with the expanding population, its accessibility becomes all the more crucial.

Within my work, you will find traces of idealism, nostalgia, and human relationships, often centered around childhood. I aim to portray these themes in a positive light, emphasizing the innocence and freedom experienced when surrounded by nature. By doing so, I strive to evoke universally shared experiences of the sublime, where emotions and landscapes intertwine.

While my artwork conveys my personal encounters with human connections in nature, it also invites the viewer to become an active participant in the narrative. It is an invitation to engage in shared stories within shared spaces.
